The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is a regional intergovernmental organization formed to promote economic, social, cultural, and political cooperation among the countries of South Asia. It was officially established on 8 December 1985 in Dhaka , Bangladesh during the first SAARC Summit. The founding members were Bangladesh , Bhutan , India , Maldives , Nepal , Pakistan , and Sri Lanka , while Afghanistan joined later in 2007, bringing the total membership to eight countries.
